some wholesale companies require a federal EIN to show you are a legitimate business

Your city and state government determine the answer to the question. The answer is usually no, but some jurisdictions either require you to have a license, or they could outright prohibit you from operating a business in your home.
One giveaway that you are operating a business from home is the daily visit from UPS. If you are not physically handling inventory, this one is not a concern.
Here is one other thought that is beyond the scope of your question, but I hope the information is useful. Your homeowners’ insurance may exempt coverage for any property or activities related to the operation of a business out of your home. You might want to read your policy as a safeguard.
The good news is that most jurisdictions are home-business friendly. I hope that yours is.
Regarding the EIN, you can get one for your business very easily from the IRS web site. It doesn’t matter if your business is a proprietorship, partnership, corporation, LLC, or other entity.
